Bayelsa State’s first executive governor, Alamieyeseigha, dies at 62

Former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Solomon Peter Alamieyeseigha has died at the age of 62.

The former governor died barely a year after losing his son,Oyoms Alamieyeseigha in Dubai. Oyoms died in a controversial situation in Dubai and was reported to have been murdered.

Alamieyeseigha, fondly called the ‘Governor-General Niger Delta,’ while he was a governor, went into coma two days ago and finally succumbed to death today, Saturday.

The deceased was an officer at the Nigeria Air Force, where he retired as a Squadron Leader in 1992 before joining politics.

He was the first executive governor of oil-rich Bayelsa State and was impeached in 2005 on corruption charges. He had escaped from the United Kingdom in 2005 and he faced trials on corruption charges on getting home. He was eventually convicted and sentenced to jail. The deceased was however granted state pardon by the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, who succeeded him as governor in 2005.

Some sources said the former governor was diabetic and fear of his new case in the UK may have contributed to his being hospitalised. He died of cardiac arrest at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.

Alamieyeseigha hailed from Amassoma, Bayelsa State.
