Supporters of Chelsea Football Club of London, trooped to the streets in various parts of the Lagos metropolis to celebrate the victory of their darling club over last night.
Nigeria is home to millions of fans of foreign football clubs, some of who have exhibited great emotions during football games.
A supporter of Arsenal Football Club, who simply introduced himself as Kingsley, couldn’t conceal his emotion as he made several calls on the commercial bus conveying him from the Lagos Island while the match was on. “I heard that we are losing the match, it is painful I am still on the BRT bus while my club is playing,” he said, as he monitored the match while the journey lasted.
From Lagos Island, to the mainland, football enthusiasts savoured the actions of the European Champions League. The winners went to the street rejoicing while these whose teams lost the evening matches were hopeful of future victory.
Nigerian local league, called the Glo Premier League, has suffered great neglect by fans, especially youths, who prefer the glamour of the foreign league to the local league. Ironically, Nigerian youths are more informed about European clubs, while most know little or nothing about the local league.
Below are the results of some the European Champions League.
